Is Whey Halal?

What is whey?

Whey is the liquid that remains after milk is curdled and strained during cheese-making. It's dried into whey powder and whey protein, found in protein supplements, baked goods, sauces and snacks.

Why is its halal status uncertain?

Whey itself is a dairy by-product, but it's produced using rennet to curdle the milk. So the ruling follows the rennet:

  • Microbial / vegetable rennet — the whey is halal.
  • Animal rennet of unknown origin — doubtful (see our article on rennet).

For whey protein supplements, flavourings and other additives (like gelatin or alcohol-based flavours) can also affect the status.

So, is it halal or not?

If the rennet source is unknown, treat the whey as doubtful unless the product is certified halal. For supplements, choose halal-certified whey protein.

How to check whey before you eat

  • Look for a halal certification, especially on protein powders.
  • Check whether the cheese/whey uses microbial or vegetable rennet.
  • Watch for added gelatin or alcohol-based flavours.
