Is Rennet Halal?
What is rennet?
Rennet is a set of enzymes used to curdle milk into cheese. It can be:
- Animal rennet — from the stomach lining of young ruminants (calves, lambs).
- Microbial rennet — produced by fungi or bacteria.
- Vegetable rennet — from plants like thistle.
Why is its halal status uncertain?
For animal rennet, the question is whether the animal was halal and slaughtered Islamically. There is also a genuine scholarly debate: some scholars hold that rennet is halal regardless of source because it is a transformed enzyme, while others require a halal source.
So, is it halal or not?
Microbial and vegetable rennet are halal. For animal rennet of unknown origin, a precaution-first stance is to treat it as doubtful unless certified, while recognising that some scholars permit it broadly.
How to check rennet before you eat
- Look for "microbial rennet", "vegetable rennet" or "suitable for vegetarians".
- Look for a halal certification on the cheese.
- Contact the producer for animal rennet of unknown origin.
