Is Glycerin (E422) Halal?

What is glycerin?

Glycerin (glycerol, E422) is a sweet, syrupy substance used as a humectant and sweetener in sweets, baked goods, drinks, toothpaste and cosmetics. It can be made from animal fat, vegetable oil, or synthetically from petroleum.

Why is its halal status uncertain?

The source determines the ruling:

  • Plant or synthetic glycerin — halal.
  • Animal glycerin — doubtful, and not halal if pork-derived or from a non-halal-slaughtered animal.

As with E471, the label usually just says "glycerin" or "E422" without the source.

So, is it halal or not?

When the origin is unknown, a precaution-first approach treats E422 as doubtful unless the product is certified halal or labelled vegan/plant-based.

How to check glycerin before you eat

  • Look for "vegetable glycerin" or a vegan label.
  • Look for a halal certification.
  • Contact the manufacturer if unsure.
