Are Marshmallows Halal?
Why marshmallows are a concern
The fluffy texture of marshmallows comes from gelatin — an animal protein. As we cover in our article on gelatin, most commercial gelatin is pork-derived, and the label often just says "gelatin" without the source.
When are marshmallows halal?
- Halal-certified marshmallows (made with halal beef or fish gelatin) → halal.
- Plant-based / vegan marshmallows (using agar, carrageenan or similar) → halal.
- Standard marshmallows with unspecified gelatin → doubtful; safest to avoid unless verified.
- Marshmallows with pork gelatin → not halal.
How to check — always verify
- Look for a halal certification or "halal gelatin" on the pack.
- Look for "vegan" or "vegetarian" marshmallows (no animal gelatin).
- If it just says "gelatin", contact the manufacturer or choose a certified alternative.
